REDUCING RISKS IN LEADING. . .

School administration is risky, yet constructive leadership requires risk taking. There are some ways to reduce the risks that deserve your (and your teams') consideration and reflection.

1
Make thoughtful decisions on which risks to take when.
2
Know what to delegate, when, and to whom.
3
Adopt a district wide policy on innovation.
4
Develop collegial statements on philosophy (discipline, homework, reporting to parents, et cetera).
5
Emphasize professional development for teams.
6
Ask one or more people to serve as your "kitchen cabinet."
7
Build alliances around achievement of students and of the school.
8
Keep yourself visible.
9
Avoid an excess of questions.
10
Make decisions on the basis of data.
11
Widen the evaluation of curriculum and share it extensively.
12
Eliminate educational jargon.
